My husband and I live in the countryside of northwestern New Jersey, and at night, the sky lights up with stars that shine so brightly. It’s beautiful, but it’s not as bright as the night Jesus was born. The Bible says that the star was so bright, it guided the Magi—the Wise Men—to baby Jesus. How amazing it must’ve been to look up in the sky and be guided by such a bright star!
This Christmas season, on December 21st, Jupiter and Saturn will form a rare alignment in the sky for the first time in 800 years. The close proximity of these planets will cause a bright light in the sky, which has been nicknamed “The Christmas Star” for its brightness at this time of year. I don’t know all the scientific facts about stars and planet alignments, but I do know that after the year we’ve had, this will be a beautiful gift from God for us to witness. I’m praying for a clear sky because I want to see it!
This time of year, from December 1st to 24th, is referred to as the Advent season. Advent means “coming or arrival,” awaiting the birth of Jesus. It’s a season of reflection, preparation and expectation. It’s a good time to consider our relationship with Jesus as it can give us so much comfort as we celebrate this season. He is our hope. This year I think all of us are longing for the hope, peace, joy and love of this season. Advent increases our hope, giving us courage for the present and expectation for the future.
I’ve been thinking about The Christmas Star of long ago, and the one we’re about to experience, and reflecting on my relationship with Jesus: Does my life shine that brightly for Him? I hope my life shines brighter each day for Him. In the midst of everything this year, it’s His love and strength that has kept me going, and I’m so thankful for everything.
As you gather with your family this Christmas season, remember The Star from long ago that led to the birth of our Lord and Savior. Take comfort and hope!

Yes, looking at the sky is so relaxing. So happy we don’t have a lot of lights in our area and we can see the stars at night.
