A Teachable Heart

A Teachable Heart

Have you ever found yourself repeating the same lesson in life—only to realize later that your heart simply wasn’t ready the first time?

I know I have.

There are moments I look back and wish my heart had been more open, more receptive, more willing to learn when God was gently trying to teach me. A teachable heart can spare us a great deal of heartache—and open the door to deeper growth.

Being teachable means more than just learning information. It’s the willingness to admit we don’t have all the answers, to receive guidance, and to allow ourselves to grow. A teachable heart says, “I’m open. I’m listening.”

Do you find it hard to ask for help?
Does pride or fear ever get in the way of receiving from others?

Sometimes our ego whispers that we should already know—or that needing help is weakness. Yet when we resist being taught, we can miss opportunities to expand, heal, and mature.

A teachable heart is essential if we want to grow, change, and experience new levels of wisdom. It’s not a one-time decision—it’s a daily posture of the heart. And when we choose it, something beautiful happens: our desire for wisdom deepens, and learning becomes a source of life rather than frustration.

How Do We Cultivate a Teachable Heart?

• Spend intentional time with God, the true source of wisdom and understanding

• Maintain a positive outlook toward learning, growth, and change

• Keep our eyes open to see, ears open to hear, and hearts open to receive

• Learn from our mistakes and look for growth in every situation

• Write down what we are learning—reflection brings clarity

• Share what we’ve learned with others; teaching reinforces learning

• Surround ourselves with people who are also growing and willing to teach

• Admit when we don’t know and ask for help without shame

Being teachable isn’t easy. We like to be in charge. When we let God do it…. life is always better. You’re right, we have let go of our pride and ego so God can work.

Sometimes God will put us in these situations, so we can experience growth. I had to learn how to ask for help, no matter how uncomfortable I felt, but it taught me that there’s no shame in that. We’re here to help each other, sometimes it’s our turn to ask for help.
